See which keywords a competitor ranks for (Search by Domain)

KWFinder's Search by Domain lists the keywords a website, subdomain or single page ranks for in Google.

Written by Dev + MKT

KWFinder's Search by Domain lists the keywords a website, subdomain or single page ranks for in Google. For each keyword it shows the position (Pos) and the estimated visits per month (EV). Each search by domain uses one keyword lookup from your plan.

Run a search by domain

  1. Open KWFinder and choose the Search by Domain tab. On smaller screens it is called By Domain.

  2. In the box that says "Enter domain or URL", type a domain, a subdomain or a URL, for example mangools.com.

  3. Choose the location.

  4. Select Find keywords.

Search by domain results for allrecipes.com in United States: the Domain label, the Try also row with competing domains, and the list with the Pos, Trend, Search, EV, CPC, PPC and KD columns.

The list on the left shows the keywords the domain ranks for. KWFinder selects the first keyword for you and loads its Google results and Keyword Difficulty (KD) in the panel on the right.

Domain, subdomain or URL: which one to enter

The box in a search by domain takes three kinds of input:

  • Domain, such as tumblr.com: the recommended form. You get the ranking keywords of every page on the domain.

  • Subdomain, such as myblog.tumblr.com: the keywords of that subdomain only.

  • URL, such as medium.com/my-amazing-blog-post: the keywords of that one page. A URL is case sensitive, and adding or removing a slash at the end changes the results.

KWFinder removes https:// and www. from what you type. After the search, a small label next to the box shows the type it detected. Select the label to see these rules in the app. For a subdomain or a URL, Change to root domain runs the search again for the whole domain.

Which locations can you choose?

A search by domain has its own fixed location list: Anywhere plus about 90 countries and regions. It has no cities, and there is no language box. The list starts on Anywhere.

With Anywhere, the results can mix keywords from several countries. A two-letter code after each keyword shows its country. Hover over the code to see the country's name.

What the Pos column shows

The Pos column is the domain's position in Google for that keyword. Its tooltip says: "The highest SERP Position of this keyword. The current SERP Position may be different due to SERP fluctuations."

The SERP overview panel on the right shows the results from its own lookup, with the date of that lookup next to the heading. So the position in the panel can differ from Pos.

What the EV column shows

The EV column estimates how many visits per month the domain gets from the keyword. Its tooltip says it is calculated from all the domain's positions in the results, their click-through rates and the average monthly search volume. A keyword with no estimate shows N/A.

In a search by domain, the Search column shows the average monthly search volume from when the estimated visits were calculated. Hover over a number to see the current value.

Sort the results

Select a column header to sort by it. Sorting by Pos, Search, EV, CPC or PPC runs the search again, so the whole result is sorted, not only the rows you see. That uses no keyword lookup. KWFinder then opens the new first keyword, which uses one SERP lookup if you have not opened it yet. Sorting by KD or Trend only reorders the keywords already in the list.

How many keywords does a search by domain show?

In KWFinder, the number of competitor keywords per search by domain depends on your plan. Basic shows up to 25, and AI Search Watcher Pro up to 5. The account menu calls this limit Competitor keywords.

For Premium and Agency, Mangools publishes no fixed number. The pricing card's tooltip for keyword suggestions says "up to 1K in 1 request for searches by a domain", and the account menu shows ∞.

Under the list, one of two buttons can appear. Load more keywords, marked BETA, loads the next keywords when the first load returned 1,000. Unlock more keywords opens the plans and pricing page.

Competing domains in the "Try also" row

Between the search box and the list, the Try also: row names domains that compete with the one you searched. Each name is a link that runs a new search by domain in the same location, which uses another keyword lookup. The arrow at the end of the row shows more domains.

While the row loads, it can say "What a query! It can take a while to load competing domains."

What a search by domain uses from your plan

A search by domain uses one keyword lookup, like a search by keyword. Basic includes 100 keyword lookups per 24 hours, Premium 500 and Agency 1,200.

Loading the first keyword's results and KD uses one SERP lookup. Clicking another keyword in the list uses one more SERP lookup. Clicking a keyword you already opened in the same results uses nothing.

"Invalid Input Detected!" or no keywords found

"Invalid Input Detected!" with "Please ensure you enter a valid URL or domain." means KWFinder could not read what you typed as a domain or a URL. Check the spelling, then try the domain alone, such as example.com.

If the list says no keywords were found, KWFinder has no ranking keywords for that domain or page in that location. The search still uses its keyword lookup. KWFinder shows no results: 'processing', errors and limit messages explains what to try.
