KWFinder's Keyword Gap compares your website with up to 5 competitors. It lists the keywords at least one competitor ranks for in Google and your site does not. A keyword gap with one competitor uses one keyword lookup, and each additional competitor uses one more.
Run a keyword gap analysis
In KWFinder, select Keyword Gap in the top menu. The page is headed "Keyword Gap Analysis".
In the first box, type your own domain, for example
example.com.In the box below it, type a competitor's domain.
To compare more competitors, select + Add up to 4 competitors and fill in the new boxes.
Choose the location.
Select Find keywords.
If a box holds something KWFinder cannot read as a domain or a URL, it says "Please insert a domain/subdomain or a URL". The location list is the same as in a search by domain: about 90 countries and regions, and no cities.
Compare domains or pages, not both
A keyword gap compares either whole sites or single pages. Enter only domains and subdomains to compare sites. Enter only full URLs to compare pages. In that case the first box holds your page, and its keywords are left out of the results.
You cannot mix the two. If you do, KWFinder does not run the analysis and says "Please choose between analysing domains/subdomains and URLs. Currently, you can't analyze a keyword gap between a domain/subdomain and a URL."
A label next to each box shows how KWFinder reads your entry. A slash at the end makes an entry a URL: example.com/ is a URL, while example.com is a domain.
How many competitors can you compare?
A keyword gap analysis compares your site with up to 5 competitors: the first box, plus 4 more from + Add up to 4 competitors.
Some plans allow only one competitor. On those, + Add up to 4 competitors opens an upgrade window instead. It says "Keyword gap analysis for two and more competitors is available with Basic and higher plans."
What a keyword gap uses from your plan
A keyword gap analysis uses keyword lookups. With one competitor it uses one. The tooltip next to + Add up to 4 competitors says "Every additional competitor consumes 1 keyword lookup". So an analysis with 5 competitors uses 5. Basic includes 100 keyword lookups per 24 hours, Premium 500 and Agency 1,200.
If you have some keyword lookups left but not enough for all your competitors, KWFinder says "You don't have enough keyword lookups for this analysis". Remove competitors, upgrade, or wait for the counters to reset.
The analysis does not open any keyword by itself. Clicking a keyword in the results loads its Google results and Keyword Difficulty (KD) in a panel on the right, which uses one SERP lookup. Close hides the panel.
Read the results
Each row in the keyword gap results is a keyword that a competitor ranks for and your site does not. The table has the usual KWFinder columns, such as Search, CPC, PPC and KD.
For your site and each competitor, two more columns follow, headed by the site's icon:
Pos: the site's position in Google for the keyword.
Traffic: the site's estimated traffic from the keyword.
Hover over a column header to see which site it belongs to. A dash means that site does not rank for the keyword, so your own columns show dashes.
Above the table, Analyzed competitors: lists the competitors. Select the arrow at the end of that row to change them and run the analysis again.
Why some rows are blurred
The number of keywords a keyword gap shows depends on your plan. The footer says "Showing" and the number. When there are more gap keywords than your plan shows, the last rows are blurred under an Upgrade now box.
The footer then says what a larger plan adds. On Free and Free+, for example, it says more keywords and up to 5 competitors are available with Basic and higher plans.
"Sorry, no gap keywords found"
KWFinder found no keyword that a competitor ranks for and your site does not, for these entries and this location. The message reminds you that case matters, as well as the slash at the end of a URL. Check each URL exactly, try the domains alone, or choose a different location.
Save or export the gap keywords
Select the keywords you want with the checkboxes. Then select Add to list to save them, or export them to a CSV file. The export has a SERP position column and an estimated traffic column for your site and for each competitor. Export keywords and open the file in Excel explains the file.
Next step
To see every keyword one competitor ranks for, not only the gap, use See which keywords a competitor ranks for (Search by Domain). For the other columns, see KWFinder columns explained.
