How tracked keywords are counted: locations, desktop and mobile

In SERPWatcher, one tracked keyword is one keyword, in one location, on one device.

Written by Dev + MKT

In SERPWatcher, one tracked keyword is one keyword, in one location, on one device. Every extra location and every extra device counts again. For example, 10 keywords tracked in 3 locations on both desktop and mobile use 60 tracked keywords.

Tracked keywords are a running total for your whole account, not a daily limit. Basic includes 200 tracked keywords in total, Premium 700 and Agency 1,500.

The counting rule

Tracked keywords used = keywords × locations × devices.

SERPWatcher creates one tracking for each location and device you choose, and each tracking holds its own copy of the keywords.

Check the cost before you start a tracking

When you add keywords to a new tracking, the counter under the box shows the cost. With one location and one device, it reads, for example, "5 entered (5 spent = 1 location, 1 device) | 45 left".

With several locations or devices, the counter multiplies. For 5 keywords in 1 location on desktop and mobile, it starts "5 entered (10 spent = 1 location, 2 devices)". For 10 keywords in 3 locations on desktop and mobile, on Basic with nothing tracked yet, the counter reads: "10 entered (60 spent = 3 locations, 2 devices) | 140 left".

If the counter turns red and says, for example, "15 over limit", the tracking would use more tracked keywords than you have left. At exactly "0 left", the counter is red too.

In the box, every keyword beyond the number of tracked keywords you have left turns red. Point at one and it says "Over limit (will be ignored)". The red keywords ignore locations and devices, so the counter can say "over limit" while no keyword is red.

For example, with 25 tracked keywords left, 20 keywords in 2 locations on desktop show no red keyword. The counter, however, reads "20 entered (40 spent = 2 locations, 1 device) | 15 over limit".

Check the counter, not only the colors. Remove keywords, locations or devices until the counter reads "left" again, and only then select Start tracking.

Desktop and mobile are separate

Desktop and mobile rankings are tracked separately, and each one counts. A keyword tracked on both devices uses 2 tracked keywords.

When you add keywords to a desktop tracking later, SERPWatcher does not add them to the mobile tracking for you. Add them to the mobile tracking as well, if you want both.

The Add keywords panel inside a tracking adds keywords to that one tracking only. Its counter has no locations or devices, for example "0 entered | 45 left".

Track the other device for an existing tracking

If a tracking has only one device, its card in the trackings list has a second tab marked with a plus, Mobile or Desktop. Select that tab, then select Yes, clone tracking in the dialog that opens. If you close the dialog, the tab shows Clone for Mobile devices or Clone for Desktop devices, which opens it again.

SERPWatcher then creates a tracking for the other device with the same domain, location and keywords. The new tracking uses the same number of tracked keywords again.

If you do not have enough tracked keywords left, SERPWatcher clones nothing. On Free+ and the paid plans, it shows "You're doing too much" and "You've used all of your tracked keywords". The message offers Upgrade my plan and Add keywords package.

Tracked keywords do not reset

Tracked keywords are not a daily or monthly allowance. They count every keyword in all your trackings right now. The Trackings page shows the total, for example "Currently tracking 5 keywords. You can track 45 more keywords."

To free tracked keywords, delete keywords or trackings you no longer need. To get more, see Out of limits? Your options.

Is there a limit on domains?

On the paid plans (Basic, Premium and Agency), SERPWatcher does not limit the number of domains separately. The pricing card's Rank tracking row shows "∞ domains", and only the total of tracked keywords counts.

Free and Free+ include 1 tracked domain.

To set up a tracking step by step, see Create a tracking in SERPWatcher.
