Which AI models are monitored, and where citations come from

AI Search Watcher can check your prompts in eight AI models: ChatGPT Search, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Grok, Claude, Llama and Mistral.

AI Search Watcher can check your prompts in eight AI models: ChatGPT Search, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Grok, Claude, Llama and Mistral. You choose the models for each monitor. Only three of them give citations: ChatGPT Search, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode.

Which AI models can you choose?

The LLMs to monitor list offers these eight AI models, in this order:

  • ChatGPT Search: answers taken from ChatGPT.com.

  • Google AI Overviews: the AI summaries in Google Search.

  • Google AI Mode: the conversational search mode in Google Search.

  • Gemini (Google), Grok (xAI), Claude (Anthropic), Llama (Meta) and Mistral (Mistral AI): AI assistants.

Every plan, including AI Search Watcher Free, offers the same eight models. A new monitor starts with ChatGPT Search and Google AI Overviews selected. Each model you select answers all the prompts in the monitor.

We can add or withdraw models over time, so the list in the app is the one that counts.

Is ChatGPT the same as ChatGPT Search?

When the pricing page and the FAQ say ChatGPT, they mean ChatGPT Search: the answers ChatGPT.com gives, with its web search. This is the ChatGPT model you can select for a new monitor.

AI Search Watcher also has an older model called ChatGPT, separate from ChatGPT Search. New monitors cannot select it. If an older monitor still tracks it, it shows in that monitor's Settings until you remove it.

Which model versions are used?

Point at a model in LLMs to monitor to see its tooltip. For Gemini, Grok, Claude, Llama and Mistral, the tooltip names the version we use. For the three search products, it says where the answers come from. Versions change over time, so this article does not list them. The tooltip in the app is the reference.

Google AI Mode works only in some countries

Google AI Mode is available only for some locations. For other locations the option is greyed out. Its tooltip says "AI Mode is currently not supported for selected location, try creating a monitor with another location." A monitor's location cannot be changed, so to monitor AI Mode, create a monitor for a supported country. Create a monitor in AI Search Watcher covers this step.

"Temporarily unavailable"

In a monitor's Settings, an AI model can show Temporarily unavailable. It means the model is switched off on our side for now. If the label is still there after the next weekly check, contact us through the live chat or at [email protected].

Change the AI models of a monitor

Open Settings and tick or untick models under LLMs to monitor, then select Save. A model you add gets its first data at the next weekly check.

Removing a model that the monitor already tracks permanently deletes that model's earlier results. Change a monitor's settings explains the warning before you confirm.

Which AI models give citations?

Citations are the web pages an AI answer links to as its sources. In AI Search Watcher, only ChatGPT Search, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode give citations. Gemini, Grok, Claude, Llama and Mistral never show citations, which is not an error.

If the model filter at the top of the page includes none of the three, the Citations page says "No citations available for selected LLMs." With one model selected, it says "No citations available for selected LLM." Select ChatGPT Search, Google AI Overviews or Google AI Mode in the filter to see citations. If the monitor tracks none of them, add one in Settings.

Google AI Overviews gives citations only when Google shows an AI Overview for the prompt. When no prompt got an AI Overview and only Google AI Overviews is selected, the page says "None of the tracked prompts triggered AI Overview". Why your monitor shows no data yet explains this message.

What the Citations page shows

The Citations page lists every page the AI answers cited for your prompts. Switch between Cited URLs (single pages) and Cited domains (whole websites). Each row shows the LLMs that cited it, its Citations count and its C. Rank.

Use the search box to find a domain, URL or page title. To get the list out, select Export, then Copy to clipboard or Export to CSV. The list follows the model, date and tag filters. AI Search Watcher metrics: Position, Visibility, AI Search Score and Citations defines Citations and C. Rank.

The Citations page with the model and Tags filters, the Search for a citation box, Export, the Cited URLs and Cited domains switch, the Show pages that don't mention the monitored brand checkbox and the first cited pages.

"Show pages that don't mention the monitored brand"

The checkbox "Show pages that don't mention the monitored brand", above the citations table, is not a filter. Selecting it opens a window that asks you to vote for this feature, the citation gap, with the button Upvote for citation gap. The button opens our Nolt feature-request board. On Cited domains, the same checkbox reads "Show websites that don't mention the monitored brand".

AI Search Watcher has no filter for cited pages that leave out your brand. The list shows cited pages whether or not they mention your brand.
